Surgeon suspended over semi-nude patient video

Health authorities in Kuwait have suspended a Kuwaiti surgeon for six months for posting a video showing him conduct liposuction on a woman who appeared almost naked.

The doctor in the video posted on his Facebook account earlier this year could be heard bragging about his surgical talent and dexterity throughout the fat-removal procedure, saying the fat was turned into juice.

However, as the video went viral on the internet, Kuwaitis expressed deep outrage and called for prompt and decisive action against the surgeon for his “reckless and unethical behaviour.”

Health Minister Dr Jamad Al Harbi ordered the Directorate of Medical Licences to launch an investigation into the incident.

The surgeon responded by claiming that his only purpose was to announce an innovative technique in removing fat.

The aim of posting the video was to announce the invention of a creative way to conduct liposuction using local anaesthesia and the possibility for the patient to remain standing,” he was quoted as saying.

“The new method allows a high level of details and reduces the need for new suction in some cases that were considered difficult in the past.”

However, the investigators rejected his arguments and called for holding him accountable for breaking regulations and failing to uphold ethics.

“The investigation conducted with the surgeon concluded that he should be suspended for not respecting the privacy of his patients and the standards of the medical profession and its humanitarian mission,” a source told the daily. “He also conducted the liposuction without having the required competence.”
