Nawaz Sharif calls Supreme Court verdict a ‘joke’

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif slams Supreme Court for ousting him from public office over long-running corruption allegations.

Nawaz Sharif was apparently planning a huge rally in his hometown, Lahore, to kindle public support for his political party.

The allegations against Nawaz Sharif spiralled from the Panama Papers leak last year, which sparked a media frenzy over the lavish lifestyles and luxury London property portfolio of the Sharif dynasty.

“What can be a bigger joke with the nation, and with a prime minister of the country, than this?” Sharif said after the top court disqualified him.

The Sharifs and their allies have consistently and noisily rejected the graft claims against them.

“Not a single penny of corruption has been proved in this decision against Nawaz Sharif and the people of Pakistan also know it,” information minister Maryam Aurangzeb told reporters after the decision.

However, Nawaz Sharif has remained unperturbed since his removal. He said he plans to visit different parts of the country in the coming weeks to garner public support.
