Man who trekked with wife’s dead body got a new luxurious life.

Dana Majhi, a poor tribal from Odisha’s backward Kalahandi district, had last year, walked 10km carrying the body of his wife on his shoulders because he couldn’t pay to transport it.

Majhi is now traveling in his Honda Motorcycle that he bought for Rs 65,000. Majhi, accompanied by one of his sobbing daughters, had walked along the same road in August last year with the body of his wife, Amang Dei, tightly wrapped in cloth after being unable to pay for a transport. Now everything had changed.

The district Hospital where his wife died of tuberculosis had no ambulance available.Images of helpless tribal man went viral all over.Majhi’s 10km-long walk with dead body got the eye of political members.

The Bahraini prime minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa gave him Rs 9 lakhs. Other individuals and organizations also helped him.

Majhi, who never had a bank account earlier, now has the sizeable fixed deposit. He married later and his new wife is Alamati Dei. She is now pregnant.

Currently, he is residing in the village Anganwadi center. His new house is under construction. The government allotted him a house under the plan the Pradhan Mantri Grameen Awas Yojana.

Majhi still cultivates the small patch of land he owns, but neighbors say he is a changed man. “Dana is not the same Dana now. He got all the benefits while we got nothing,” complained Gundal, a Melgar resident.
