‘Honour’ killing of Dalit youth Shankar: death for six, including father-in-law

 

A court here on Tuesday handed death, sentenced to six people for killing a Dalit youth, Shankar in Udumalpet in 2016, in a suspected case of ‘honor’ killing.The court found 11 of the accused guilty but acquitted the victim’s mother in law and two others.

Shankar, 22, and Kausalya, 19, were attacked by the motorcycle-borne gang in full public view on March 13, 2016, in Tirupur district, leading to the Dalit youth’s death. Kausalya survived injuries to her head. The couple had married despite opposition from their families.

A senior police officer said the girl’s father, Chinnasamy, had allegedly paid Rs 50,000 in advance to the five-member gang to carry out the attack and the police recovered Rs 40,000 from them.

One of the accused also told the police that Chinnasamy decided to kill his daughter after he faced ’embarrassment’ at a marriage function due to her act.

He had tried to separate the couple by offering a hefty sum to Shankar but the latter rejected it, the officer said.

The court said Tuesday that the killers had been hired by Shankar’s father-in-law. His mother-in-law was acquitted.
