Trailing the allegations of sexual misconduct against film producer Harvey Weinstein, #MeToo campaign created waves on social media in October 2017. The campaign denounced sexual harassment and encouraged millions of women to recount their experiences of the sexual harassment publicly. Alyssa Milano, an American actress was the first to use the term in a tweet and the campaign has been named as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for 2017.

Twitter users were quite baffled by US President’s faux pas tweet: “Despite the constant negative press covfefe” Soon the internet was burning and the users were in a mad rush to define the word ‘covfefe’ in their own way. Trump finally deleted the tweet a few hours after it raked a storm on the internet, and further tweeted in a self-detesting manner, “Who can figure out the true meaning of ‘covfefe’ ??? Enjoy!”

Sarahah, which translates to ‘honesty’, is an app that was created by Saudi Arabian Zain al- Abidin Tawfiq to allow employees to post feedback to their bosses has now become a platform for seeking peer validation and cyberbullying. The app has attracted around 300 million users around the world that lets you receive anonymous comments from friends and strangers.

Dhinchak Pooja, India’s latest cringe-pop sensation created furore this year by her songs that went viral on social media. Her song Selfie Maine Leli Aaj was viewed about 18 million times making her a sensation in no time.
5.NASA Moon’s tweet
During August’s solar eclipse, @NASAMoon blocked @NASASun, both being official Twitter pages of NASA. The tweet was extremely popular and was accompanied by a screenshot of the same.

“Exasperating farrago of distortions, misrepresentations & outright lies being broadcast by an unprincipled showman masquerading as a journalist,” tweeted Shashi Tharoor on May 8 as a response to claims on the mysterious death of Tharoor’s wife Sunanda Pushkar. The tweet soon became prey to jokes on social media. The word ‘farrago’ became a trending search on Google with a rise from 0 to 100 on the same day itself.

#BoycottSnapchat, as social media trend was used by Indians after Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel said he doesn’t want to expand in “poor countries like India and Spain” because it is only for rich people. India being one of the top countries to download apps, users came heavily on the statement and started uninstalling the app and further rated it to one star on Google play store.
