The father, Sachin, a Hindu claimed that the child was named ‘Abhinav’ on the 28th day ceremony(A Hindu practise of naming a child) and wanted the name Abhinav Sachin, but the mother a Christian held firm that she wanted the name ‘Johan Mani Sachin’ as he was baptised by that name. Because of this difference in opinion, the couple’s request for birth certificate at the Municipal authorities have been put on hold.

The counsel appearing for Wife said that she is ready to compromise by dropping ‘Mani’ from the name. The judge heard both parties and considering the urgency of the situation, named the child as ‘Johan sachin’.

“…as a conciliatory measure and with a view to pacify both the parents of the child, it would be in the interests of justice to accede to the wishes of both the parents to the extent possible and therefore, assign the name ‘Johan Sachin’ to the second child of the petitioners in both these writ petitions,”said Justice AK Jayasankaran Nambiar in his judgement.

The child will have his first name as per the wishes of hi mother while retaining his fathers name. The couple is having a troubled marital life and is in the middle of a divorce. The child spends most of his time with  his mother father is only allowed to have an occasional custody.

With such obstinacy from their part, it is interesting how they got married in the first place.
