In order to avoid the time delay in getting a rape victim identified, The Ministry of Women and Children Development would be distributing specially designed kits to all police stations and hospitals to carry out an immediate medical examination into sexual assault cases, said Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on Wednesday.
She also said that the rape investigation kits were being procured by state governments with the financial support from the Nirbhaya Fund. Nirbhaya Fund was devised to support the initiatives of the government and NGOs working towards ensuring the safety of women in India.

To ensure quick investigation in rape cases, the Government will make sure that these kits are available in the police stations and hospitals across the country.
The content in the Kit includes items which will help to deliver evidence such as blood and semen samples in rape and assault cases. The Kits also contain the instructions on the evidence to be collected from a crime scene.
The results of from the medical examination will be available within two months of sending the kits to the closest labs.
Maneka Gandhi added that Sakshi Suraksha Advanced DNA laboratory had been started in Chandigarh for forensic analysis of samples collected from rape victims. She also informed the putting up of forensic labs in Mumbai, Chennai, Pune, Bhopal, and Guwahati.
