Shashi Tharoor booked for ‘Hindu Pakistan’ comment

For days, Shashi Tharoor has been under the scanner for his of ‘Hindu Pakistan’. He has now been booked for his controversial remark.

A case under Section 153A/295A of the Indian Penal Code and Section 2 of The Prevention Of Insults To National Honour Act, 1971 has been filed against Shashi Tharoor by a Kolkata-based advocate Sumeet Chowdhury.

In his complaint against the Thiruvananthapuram MP, the petitioner alleged that Tharoor has issued public statements whereby he has stated that if Indians vote for a particular party (BJP) in 2019 General Elections, it will turn India into ‘Hindu Pakistan’ and will tear the Constitution of the country.

Chowdhury further stated that the veteran Congress leader has even refused to apologize for his remarks which are in absolutely bad taste.

This has hurt the religious sentiments of the countrymen, insulted the Constitution, and has been intended to create great conflict and disharmony based on the religious divide, the petitioner alleged.

Advocate Chowdhury stated that Tharoor has also insulted Indians by comparing an ‘Islamic State’ like Pakistan with a ‘Secular State’ like India.

Tharoor has also ignored the fact that India is a far superior nation compared to Pakistan, which most countries scorn and disdain, he stated.

Tharoor has reportedly been asked before the court on August 14 in this connection.

Interestingly, the court has also allowed authorities to issue summons to him through his official and Facebook handles apart from the regular process of law.

Following his accusations, the court has reportedly summoned Tharoor through social media platforms Facebook and Twitter. The Kolkata court has asked him to appear on August 14 in connection with the case.

Tharoor had stirred a controversy on Thursday by saying that if voted to power again, the BJP will rewrite the Constitution and pave the way for the creation of a “Hindu Pakistan”.

Following his remarks, Congress’ party asked him to ‘choose words responsibly’. “India’s values & fundamentals are an unequivocal guarantee of our civilizational role & set us apart from the divisive idea of Pakistan. All Congress leaders must realize this historic responsibility bestowed upon us while choosing words & phraseology to reject BJP’s hatred,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala had tweeted.

Notably, the grand old party’s advice to Tharoor came after the BJP reacted strongly against his comments, with party spokesman Sambit Patra calling it “extraordinary” as it was an “attack on the Indian democracy and Hindus”.

“Yet again Tharoor has cattle-classed Indian democracy. The Congress’ character is that it crosses the ‘Lakshman Rekha’ (limit) in its hatred for Narendra Modi and the BJP, and in doing so, it assaults Indian democracy,” he told reporters in the national capital.

After facing flak Tharoor made light of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the right-wing leaders’ criticism by tweeting a popular Bollywood song from the 1971 hit movie ‘Amar Prem’ ‘kuchh to log kahenge logon ka kaam hai kehnaa.’  The Thiruvananthapuram MP had also refused to retract his statement, saying the BJP-RSS idea of a Hindu Rashtra remained the mirror image of the neighbouring “intolerant theocratic state”.
