The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage of devotees of Shiva, known as K?nvarias or “Bhole”, to Hindu pilgrimage places of Haridwar, Gaumukh and Gangotri in Uttarakhand and Sultanganj in Bihar to fetch holy waters of Ganges River.

The roadsides have various camps and rest stops for the devotees, leaving a part of the road for the cars, buses and other vehicles. Despite the traffic, the pilgrims are often seen walking in large groups on the road balancing the pots on their shoulders.

The devotees travel from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. Each year, heavy security measures are taken by the government and the police. The traffic on the Delhi-Haridwar national highway is also diverted.
