Hong Kong’s iconic ‘floating hotel’ sinks in the South China Sea

A popular Hong Kong floating restaurant has sunk in the South China Sea. According to reports, the Jumbo Floating Restaurant sank after experiencing ‘adverse circumstances’ in the sea. Aberdeen Restaurant Enterprises stated on Twitter that no staff members were hurt.

‘The vessel faced bad weather while transiting the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, and water soon entered before it began to tilt. Despite the efforts of the towing business in charge of the journey to recover the vessel, it capsized on Sunday’. This occurrence has left the firm ‘extremely heartbroken,’ according to the company.

It stated that before the voyage, maritime engineers were recruited to check the floating restaurant and put hoardings on the vessel, and that ‘all appropriate clearances’ had been received. The floating hotel was designed to seem like a Chinese royal palace. Global superstars and personalities such as Tom Cruise and Queen Elizabeth II have dined there.

For decades, the floating hotel struggled financially. The restaurant, which served Cantonese food since 1976, was still spending millions in maintenance costs each year, and a dozen businesses and organizations had rebuffed an opportunity to take it over for free. The hotel was hauled away by tugboats before sinking.

The epidemic of the Coronavirus had had a significant impact on business. Jumbo discontinued operations in 2020, the epidemic year. Following months of COVID-19 limitations, its parent firm was unable to locate a new owner and lacked the cash to keep it running.
