Delhi HC rejects Omar Abdullah’s request for divorce from estranged wife

The Delhi High Court has rejected the divorce plea filed by former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah against his estranged wife Payal Abdullah. The court stated that there was no flaw in the family court’s earlier judgment, which found the allegations of cruelty to be vague and unproven. The bench of justices Sanjeev Sachdeva and Vikas Mahajan concluded that the appellant failed to demonstrate any act constituting cruelty, whether physical or mental. A detailed order on the matter will be available later in the day.

Omar Abdullah had appealed to the high court challenging the family court’s August 2016 decision that dismissed his divorce petition. In his plea, Abdullah asserted that their marriage had irreversibly broken down, seeking permission to remarry. The couple, married in 1994, reportedly ceased conjugal relations in 2007. In September 2023, the high court ordered Omar Abdullah to pay Rs 1.5 lakh monthly to Payal as interim maintenance, along with Rs 60,000 each for the education of their two sons every month.
