Sydney: Australian government has decided to tighten visa rules for international students and low-skilled workers. The decision was taken to halve its migrant intake over the next two years .
Under the new policies, international students would need to secure higher ratings on English tests and there would be more scrutiny on a student’s second visa application that would prolong their stay. The students applying for a graduate visa will require a score of 6.5 up from 6.0, while student visa applicants will need a 6.0 up from 5.5.

‘Our strategy will bring migration numbers back to normal. But it’s not just about numbers. It’s not just about this moment and the experience of migration our country is having at this time. This is about Australia’s future,’ Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said.
The decision comes after net immigration was expected to have peaked at a record 510,000 in 2022-23. Indian students are the second largest group of international students in Australia, and around 1,20,000 were enrolled in the country as of August 2023.
