Shree Rajput Karni Sena, a group of the Rajput community, has a motive for a nationwide ban on ‘Padmavati’. Yesterday Supreme Court (SC) refused a petition by lawyer Manohar Lal pointing to the offshore release of the film “Padmavati”. Few states have even announced that they are not going to release the film in their states. The release of the movie, earlier scheduled for December 1, has been deferred

Meanwhile, politics over Padmavati is set to heat up as amid the raging controversy over the film; two Parliamentary panels headed by BJP MPs will hear the issue on Thursday.

While the 30-member Department Related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Technology chaired by Anurag Thakar has called Bhansali to hear his views on the matter, the 14-member Committee on Petitions chaired by Bhagat Singh Koshiyari will take a presentation from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has two Lok Sabha MPs from the ruling party requested the panel to recommend a ban on the release of the film.

Officials from I and B ministry will give back to back presentations to the two panels.

The IT panel’s meeting agenda is consideration and adoption of two draft action are taken reports and briefing by the representatives of the I and B Ministry on the subject “Film Industry: Problems and Challenges”. Thakur’s panel has also called members from the Censor Board to discuss Bhansali’s film.

It is not yet clear whether Bhansali, who has been invited to present his views, will appear before the panel or not.

After a storm over alleged distortion of history in the film, the issue has led to a face-off between the proponents and opponents of the movie and kicked in a debate about freedom of expression.

Koshiyari-led panel will take the ministry’s briefing on the representation of Chittorgarh MP CP Joshi and Kota-Bundi MP Om Birla (both from BJP) regarding their request to impose a ban on the release of the film. The two MPs wrote to the Committee last week that the “distortion” of history in the film could hurt sentiments of people in their Parliamentary seat and the Rajput community.
