Yahoo announced the 2017 Year in Review (YIR) for India. The search engine named Bharatiya Janata party president and master strategist Amit Shah, who orchestrated party’s victory in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Manipur in 2017 as YIR’S Personality of the Year 2017.
Based on users’ search and reading preferences, Yahoo explained that Shah’s skills in ensuring various successes for the BJP and his influence on Modi’s hold over the country and the BJP, without which “Modi might find it difficult to hold on to his high popularity”, prompted Yahoo to give him the title. While Modi polled 43 per cent votes in the People’s Choice survey online, actor Priyanka Chopra followed with 12 percent of the votes.
Entertainment, cricket, and politics were the three categories that enthralled Indian Internet users in 2017.
Sunny Leone continued her reign as Yahoo India’s Most Searched Female Celebrity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi captured the top spot for his government’s ‘note-worthy’ reforms. Other awardees include ‘Papa’s angel’ HoneyPreet Insaan for her controversial life with the rape-convict and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. Entertainer and stand-up comedian Kapil Sharma’s in numerous public fallouts have seen his name figure in the list of most searched personalities. Celebrity and the revered film actor Vinod Khanna who passed away in April this year under the Male category. Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and US President Donald Trump round off the bottom of the list.
Aadhaar topped the ‘Most Searched Newsy Terms’ category. The others included GST and the Ryan school murder. GST was also the Top Business Story That Shook the Nation. Other stories on this list were India’s move up 30 places in the World Bank’s ease of doing the business ranking, and Moody’s Investor Services’ first sovereign rating upgrade for India in 14 years.
