Being a cancer patient takes a toll on the patients’ body, and the expenses of the treatment takes a toll on the family’s purse. But this new health insurance will be a relief to most people.

Beginning January 2018, three major cancers will be fully covered in the basic insurance package, Dubai Health Authority said.

The package will cover screening, diagnosis and full treatment of breast, colorectal and cervical cancer. Prior to the announcement, cancer coverage under the mandatory health insurance scheme as part of the basic benefit plan was limited to Dhs 150,000.

The initiative will cover both the screening and treatment of the three cancers under the basic health cover where screening will be strictly as per the international screening criteria.

Dr. Haidhar Al Yousuf, Director of Health Funding at DHA, said: “This is a milestone in terms of health insurance coverage and we have redefined health insurance through this initiative.

Prior to this scheme, cancer coverage under the mandatory health insurance scheme as part of the basic benefit plan was limited to Dhs 150,000. Now that is no longer the case. Under the scheme, those detected with breast, colorectal or cervical cancer will receive coverage from screening until treatment.
