Famous South African cricketer announces his retirement after the Australia series

South Africa has produced a good number of quality fast bowlers. Among them, Morne Morkel was one tall fast bowler who contributed immensely to the team. Now the speedster has shocked everyone by announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket due to the commitment towards his family. He said that he will be last seen wearing the South African jersey in the upcoming series against Australia.

Morkel has played in 81 Test matches, 112 ODIs and 41 T20Is so far.He made his debut against India and has 294 test wickets, 188 ODI wickets and 47 T20i wickets in his kitty. The extraordinary fast bowler also posses 7 five-wicket hauls in Tests and two in ODIs.

Morkel said that the decision to quit was indeed tough, but he felt that it was time to start another chapter in life. He said, “I have a young family and a foreign wife, and the current demanding international schedule has put a lot of strain us. I have to put them first and this decision will only benefit us going forward.” the pace bowler also thanked his teammates, the South African cricket board and his dear ones who supported him during his amazing career. He also added that currently he is very much focussed on the upcoming series against the Aussies.

Morkel is currently the fifth all-time wicket-taker for South Africa in Test matches and has 529 international wickets to his name. He also played an instrumental role in helping his team win the recently concluded test series against India. However, the 33-year-old bowler has added that he would be available for the various cricket leagues across the world. The series between South Africa and Australia will begin on March 1st.
