Latest data released by World Health Organisation(WHO) threw some dismal statistics that include facts as terrible as 9 out of 10 people in the world breathing polluted air. It is in this context that PM Modi’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Scheme came in for rich praise as it provided about 37 million women living below poverty line with free LPG connections and hence better quality air. His initiative allowed such suffering women to change in to cleaner household energy.

The ambitious scheme was launched almost 2 years ago in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Its primary aim is to ensure the health of women and children , particularly below poverty line. They were provided with an LPG connection along with a support of Rs 1600 per connection for the next three years. It was estimated that out of 24 crore households in India, about 10 crore households were deprived of LPG and used firewood, Cowdung-cakes and coal etc to cook. Fumes out of this cooking method is detrimental to health and is as worse as burning 400 cigarettes per hour. In the initial stage of the programme, it was decided that 5 crore LPG connections will be provided at an estimated cost of 8000 crores
The report said that while the conditions around the world are still dangerous, there are some positive signs emerging. It looked at the measures adopted by different countries to tackle the problem of air pollution.” For example, in just two years, India’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana Scheme has provided some 37 million women living below the poverty line with free LPG connections to support them to switch to clean household energy use,” the report said. The report will fuel prime minister’s enthusiasm to come up with more such projects
