Justice Karnan sentenced to 6 months imprisonment

The Supreme Court on Tuesday held Calcutta High Court judge Justice C S Karnan guilty of contempt of court, and has sentenced him to six months imprisonment.

Justice Karnan will be forthwith taken into custody.

The apex court has banned the media from publishing content of orders passed by Justice Karnan last night by which he “sentenced” Chief Justice of India J S Khehar and seven other judges of the Supreme Court to five years rigorous imprisonment.

“We are of the unanimous opinion that Justice C S Karnan has committed contempt of court, judiciary and judicial process of the gravest nature,” Chief Justice JS Khehar said.

In February, the Supreme Court had issued a comtempt notice against Justice Karnan for degrading the judiciary.

Justice Karnan, on his part, directed the SC judges to appear before him on May 28 and later reposted the matter to May 1.

The SC bench ordered Justice Karnan to be mentally examined. On May 4, Justice Karnan refused to undergo medical tests as directed by the SC and conveyed the message to the team of doctors that he is absolutely normal and has a stable mind.
