Southwest monsoon hits Andamans early !

The Southwest monsoon has advanced into the South Andaman Sea and the Nicobar Islands three days ahead of its normal onset, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“It is too early to forecast whether the monsoon would hit the Kerala coast ahead of the normal onset date, June 1,” said K.G. Ramesh, IMD Director-General.

Mr Ramesh added that the prevailing conditions can’t suggest whether monsoon could hit Kerala early as it has arrived early in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

“In view of the strengthening and deepening of south-westerly winds, persistent cloudiness and rainfall, the southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of Southeast Bay of Bengal, the Nicobar Islands, entire South Andaman Sea and parts of North Andaman Sea today,” a source said.

The Department said that the conditions are favourable for further advance of south-west monsoon.
