Mumbai Kamala Mills fire: 2 managers of pub arrested, owners absconding

The Mumbai fire that took the lives of 14 had resulted in the demolishment of illegal buildings and a quick search for the pub owners and officials.

The NM Joshi Marg police on Monday arrested two managers employed with ‘1 Above’, a pub in the Kamala Mills compound, where a massive blaze broke out and claimed 14 lives last week.

Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Deepak Deoraj confirmed that Kevin Bawa and Nelson Lopez were arrested early on Monday morning, and added that they would be produced in the Metropolitan Magistrate’s court in Bhoiwada on Monday afternoon.

An officer with the NM Joshi Marg police added, “Both the managers were present at the pub but fled as soon as the fire broke out without guiding the patrons regarding emergency exits and other such measures.

“It fell to the kitchen staff to help the survivors out of the pub. It was the duo’s job to keep the emergency exits open or at least open them when the fire broke out, which might have reduced the fatalities.”

The duo has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder under the Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, the three directors of 1 Above continue to be on the run and the police said that efforts are still underway to trace and apprehend them.
