The Chinese and Thai women and one man are on trial at the Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance accused of prostitution and staying on illegally in the country.

The man and two of the women are accused of human trafficking and running the brothel. The court heard that the women – who were brought into the UAE on visit visas by the Chinese man – engaged in the sex trade.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the women admitted to violating residency laws but denied engaging in prostitution. “We ask for forgiveness for the illegal stay in the country,” said the women. “We should be allowed to go back to our country without being jailed because we never engaged in prostitution.”

The women claimed that they had overstayed their visit visas as they were “looking for jobs”.

The trial was adjourned until January 31.
