Huge setback for Congress; CBI moves to Supreme court to reopen Bofors case!

Just a day after Congress registered a huge victory in Rajasthan Bypolls, CBI has moved Supreme Court to reopen Bofors case. This move is viewed as a set back for the grand old party.

CBI has moved to the Supreme Court against a 12-year-old High court verdict that canceled the case against the UK-based business magnates Hinduja brothers, and the Swedish firm, in the Rs. 64-crore Bofors case. It was on May 31, 2005, the Delhi high court discharged all the accused.

The interesting thing is that the move from CBI comes just days after the advice given by the Attorney General KK Venugopal, who has advised the Government that the court might most probably dismiss the case in the name of the long delay.

In his letter addressed to the Department of Personal and Training Secretary, Venugopal had said, “Now, more than 12 years have elapsed. Any SLP filed before the Supreme Court at this stage, in my view, is likely to be dismissed by the Court on account of the long delay itself.”

The case involves a 64 crore scam. The Bofors scandal, relating to alleged payment of kickbacks in the buying of howitzer artillery guns, rocked the then government under Rajiv Gandhi in the early 1990s.
