Delhi Police contacts Meta regarding URL of Rashmika Mandanna deepfake video

Following the filing of an FIR by the Delhi Police in response to a ‘deep fake’ video featuring actress Rashmika Mandanna, authorities have written to Meta, the parent company of social media platform Facebook, requesting the URL of the account responsible for sharing the manipulated content. The police are actively pursuing information on individuals who shared the fraudulent video on social media. An officer involved in the investigation stated that the Delhi Police is seeking access to the URL ID from which the deepfake video originated. The FIR, registered under sections 465 (forgery) and 469 (forgery for the purpose of harming reputation) of the Indian Penal Code, along with sections 66C and 66E of the Information Technology Act, is under the purview of the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations Unit of the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

To address the issue promptly, a specialized team of officers has been assembled, with expectations that the case will be resolved expeditiously. In parallel, the Delhi Commission for Women has also taken notice of the incident, issuing a notice to the city police and urging action against those involved in creating and disseminating the deep fake video. The deep fake video, suspected to be generated with the assistance of Artificial Intelligence, gained widespread attention on social media. The manipulated content featured the face of Rashmika Mandanna superimposed onto the original video of a British-Indian influencer, leading to concerns about the misuse of technology for potentially harmful purposes.
