Infant and parents emerge unscathed as car skids down 100-ft gorge in Peerumedu.

In a harrowing incident at Pambanar Town in Peerumedu, Idukki, a family of three, including an eight-month-old baby, narrowly escaped tragedy as their car slid down a 100-ft gorge on the Kollam-Theni National Highway. The family, comprising Ajay Mathew (33), Sajina Mathews (32), and their baby Aaron, was en route to Wayanad.

Fortunately, the car didn’t plummet to the depths of the gorge. “Luckily, the car did not plunge into the depth. Due to shrubs and creepers, the car went down slowly and was lying upside down at the bottom of the ravine. Both Sajina and the baby escaped unhurt while Ajay suffered a small injury on his hand,” shared Peerumedu CI Vishnu Kumar.

Quick response from local residents and the fire and rescue services ensured the family’s prompt shift to Peerumedu Taluk Hospital. CI Vishnu Kumar highlighted the absence of crash barriers on the curve, despite repeated requests to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). With the Sabarimala pilgrimage approaching, he emphasized the need for urgent action.

Despite claims that the curve requires careful braking, Ajay mentioned to the police that he lost control of the vehicle without applying brakes. The incident underscores the importance of safety measures on accident-prone stretches of highways.
