Landmark Kidney Transplant Success at Kerala Government Hospital

In a groundbreaking achievement for Indian healthcare, Ernakulam’s General Hospital, a district-level government institution, successfully conducted a kidney transplant on Sunday, as stated by the state health department. This significant milestone witnessed a 50-year-old mother altruistically donating a kidney to her 28-year-old son, with both patients reportedly in stable recovery post-surgery.

The Kerala government takes immense pride in this feat, asserting that it signifies the inaugural organ transplant procedure at a district-level government hospital across the nation. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lauded the medical team, emphasizing that this accomplishment serves as inspiration for the continued modernization of public health institutions in the state.

“Kerala’s public health sector has achieved another milestone with a kidney transplant at Ernakulam General Hospital. This is the first time that an organ transplant surgery has been performed at a district-level government hospital in India. Congratulations to the team behind this remarkable feat,” expressed Vijayan on ‘X’.

The state health department highlighted that the Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (K-SOTTO) recently granted registration and certification to the general hospital. The surgery unfolded in the super-specialty block, equipped with modern facilities exceeding Rs 50 lakh in value. This underscores the commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure and accessibility in Kerala.
