Proposed Bills for 33% Women’s Quota in J-K, Puducherry assemblies expected

On Tuesday, the government intends to present two bills in Parliament aimed at securing a 33% reservation for women in the assemblies of the Union Territories (UTs) of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry, according to sources. In September, the Parliament had passed the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which outlines the reservation of one-third of seats for women in both the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. However, the implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is contingent upon a delimitation exercise scheduled for 2029.

The proposed bills reflect the government’s commitment to gender inclusivity, targeting specific UTs to ensure adequate representation for women in their legislative bodies. In Puducherry, with 30 assembly constituencies, and in Jammu and Kashmir, where a delimitation exercise increased the total assembly seats to 114, including 24 designated for areas under Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, the bills aim to usher in a more equitable political landscape. The move aligns with broader legislative efforts to empower women in governance and is part of the government’s ongoing initiatives to foster gender equality and women’s participation in decision-making processes.
