Tamil Nadu govt to provide Rs 6,000 flood relief to every ration card holder

The Tamil Nadu government has declared that the Rs 6,000 flood relief allocation will be extended to all ration cardholders in the four districts impacted by Cyclone Michaung, encompassing Chennai, according to State Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu’s announcement on Monday. Token distribution for accessing the relief is scheduled for December 16 in Chennai, with the disbursement process anticipated to conclude within about 10 days. Chief Minister M K Stalin had previously announced on December 9 a financial aid package of Rs 6,000 for each family affected by the flood, stipulating that the assistance would be provided in cash. Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur faced inundation during December 3 and 4 due to Cyclone Michaung.

Minister Thennarasu asserted that the state government’s prompt and effective actions prevented a major loss of human lives in the wake of the cyclone. He specifically highlighted the government’s handling of the Chembarambakkam dam, where the controlled release of reservoir water played a crucial role in averting widespread inundation. Thennarasu commended Chief Minister Stalin’s direct involvement, attributing the avoidance of a significant catastrophe in Chennai to his leadership. However, he criticized the BJP and AIADMK for unwarranted criticism of the state government’s flood response.

An official release reported that relief worth Rs 17.80 crore has been distributed, encompassing essential items such as drinking water bottles, bread, biscuits, milk powder, rice, gram, and cooking ingredients. Additionally, bedspreads, clothing, and other necessities were provided to those affected.
