Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar lauds Indian cricket for a successful run in 2023

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has expressed admiration for the success of Indian cricket in the year 2023. The senior men’s team had a remarkable year, winning the Asia Cup and finishing as runners-up in the home ODI World Cup and the WTC final. Meanwhile, the women’s team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, achieved significant milestones by clinching gold in the Asian Games and securing Test victories against England and Australia in Mumbai.

Gavaskar also highlighted the success of the U-19 Women’s team, led by Shafali Varma, which won the T20 World Cup in South Africa. Speaking on the Star Sports show ‘Follow the Blues,’ Gavaskar praised the outstanding performances of both the men’s and women’s teams throughout the year.

The former cricketer particularly commended the Indian women’s team for their Test victories at the end of the year against formidable opponents like England and Australia. He noted that these wins were significant, considering the challenges the Indian women’s team had faced against these teams in the past.

Gavaskar acknowledged the excitement in Indian cricket in 2023, emphasizing the team’s dominant performance with ten consecutive wins before the ODI World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. Despite the disappointment in the final, Gavaskar highlighted the overall success of Indian cricket in the year, including the team’s eighth Asia Cup title in September.

Additionally, Gavaskar mentioned the historic Test win by the Indian women’s team against Australia, marking a significant achievement in the evolution of women’s cricket in the country. He also noted the introduction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in India as a positive development for women’s cricket.
