Indian diplomats turned away Hindu Rohingya refugees from Myanmar

The condition is not so good for the 101 Hindu Rohingya families in the world’s largest refugee settlement located in south-east Bangladesh. Nearly 410 people, mainly children, live in a ‘Hindu Camp’ located just outside the Camp 1 which is part of the 27 refugee settlements that make up the Kutupalong-Balukhali camps, deemed to be the largest in the
world.

To prevent any untoward incidents, the Bangladeshi police have put up 24/7 surveillance around the camp as it is surrounded by the camps housing Rohingya Muslim communities. Amnesty International had published a report which brought forth the brutality, rape, and arson committed on the Hindu community by the Rohingya Muslim community there in Myanmar. In the Hindu camps women sporting vermillion, are living along with their families in a camp built around a small bamboo and tarpaulin temple to Lord Krishna and his consort Radha.

In the decades-long strife between the Buddhists and the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, the minority Hindu community had to suffer a lot before they were forced out of their land. From the reports, it is visible that they had to suffer the atrocities of both the Rohingya Muslims and the Myanmar Army.

The Indian External Affairs officials who were in touch with the leaders of the Rohingya Hindu Community confirmed about the 101 Hindu families but they denied that the refugees’ origin was Indian and also said that the refugees were ready to go back to Myanmar. But the account by the UN aid workers suggested otherwise. They said that the bulk of the Hindu refugees were afraid to go back to Myanmar fearing persecution. The Hindu refugees wanted to live ‘happily’ in  India if the Indian government would take them.

The claim made by the Indian diplomats in Ministry of External Affairs that the Rohingya Hindus were not ‘Indian’ seems to be misguided as the NVC(National Verification Cards) issued by the Myanmar Government classifies their race as ‘Indian’ or  ‘guests from India’.

Indian Government’s apathetic stand towards the Hindu refugees from Pakistan had invited wrath from many quarters then, now a Hindutwa government at the helms, the situation has shown no difference which will make the Hindu Rohingyas the ‘least wanted’ minority among the ‘most unwanted people’ in the world.
