Kerala Government diktat to hand over KSRTC’s land to SCT College : Asia’s largest bus workshop under threat of closure

As another shocker to the debt-stricken KSRTC, Transport Department Secretary gave an order to the Central Workshop in Pappanamcode to hand over 8 acres of land held by them to Sree Chithra Thirunal Engineering College there. The land under lease to be given to SCT college should be handed over within one week as per the order. Anyways the move is considered to hit the death knell of Asia’s largest bus workshop.

Sree Chithra Thirunal Engineering College in Pappanamcode had been started under KSRTC and also the latter’s land, as well as buildings, were handed over to KSRTC. As per a treaty which had been signed in 1998, 7.57 acres of land has to be still handed over to the college by KSRTC. But any further land distribution was halted by the KSRTC following the change of ownership of SCT college from them to the Higher Education Department.

Yesterday Transport Secretary K.R.Jyotilal ordered KSRTC to handover the 7.57 acres of the land left within one week in adherence to the treaty signed in 1998. The order came as a bolt from the blue to the KSRTC Central Workshop with a total land area of 9 acres. The KSRTC employees are afraid that Giving away 7.57 acres from that 9 acres would lead to the closure of the facility.

The order also demanded an explanation from the KSRTC MD for not handing over the land as agreed in the treaty.
