Karnataka Home Minister’s close friend, leader of Congress hacked to death

Congressman M. Srinivas was killed on Monday in the Kolar district of Karnataka, allegedly by six men. For his strong friendships with previous Speaker Ramesh Kumar and Home Minister G. Parmeshwara, Srinivas was well-known.

Srinivas was overseeing the building of his bar before going back to his farmhouse. The six attackers approached the Congress leader and greeted him, according to the police. He invited them to sit with him and sip coffee, giving the impression that he knew them.

‘He (M Srinivas) knew them and offered them coffee. The security official with him went to arrange it. He had 3-4 chairs around him and some of the assailants sat down on them. Then one of them sprayed some chemical in his eyes and he started screaming. Another attacker started stabbing him, after which he ran towards the wall. His bodyguard saw this but he also ran away in panic,’ a senior police official said.

The attackers addressed him as ‘uncle’ and offered to shake hands before suddenly hitting him with machetes, according to an eyewitness.

‘We were having tea with him, these people came and one of them shook hands with him and asked – ‘how are you uncle?’ Another person from behind sprayed something on him and two of them started attacking them. One chased me and threw a machete at me. I somehow escaped from there and ran inside a brick factory for my safety. I didn’t know what happened after that,’ the eyewitness said.

The Congress politician died from his injuries on the route to the hospital, according to the police, despite being rushed right away to Jalappa Hospital.
