Alappuzha Farmer Takes Own Life as Banks Deny Agricultural Loan

In another tragic incident in the Kuttanad region of Alappuzha, K G Prasad, a 55-year-old farmer from Thakazhi, took his own life, citing an acute financial crisis exacerbated by the State Government and certain banks. According to his suicide note, Prasad had struggled to secure a loan for paddy cultivation, facing rejection due to a ‘low CIBIL score.’ Despite previous attempts to repay a loan, banks refused further assistance, leaving him unable to purchase essential inputs.

The CIBIL score, reflecting a borrower’s credit history, became a hindrance, and Prasad accused the state government of failing to repay the ‘PRS loan’ related to paddy procurement, further impacting his creditworthiness. Without funds for fertilizers, his last hope for the crops faded away. The government’s alleged delay in repaying a Rs 5 lakh loan for paddy procured in the 2022-23 season added to his distress.

Prasad, a former BJP activist and district president of Bharatiya Kisan Sangh, expressed his despair in a suicide note, lamenting the government’s negligence in repaying the PRS loan and stating that he had resorted to drinking again due to his dire circumstances. The Opposition leader, V D Satheesan, criticized the government’s lackadaisical approach in addressing farmers’ issues, highlighting the urgent need for proactive measures.
