A robot called Remus 6000, loaded with sensors and cameras, which can dive nearly four miles have discovered a 310 year old Spanish shipwreck carrying treasure worth $17 billion. The exact place where the treasure was found is still kept as a secret, but it was found in November 2015 off the coast of Cartagena, Colombia. It’s a cargo of gold, silver and emeralds.
Bronze Cannos confirmed that the holy Grail of shipwrecks have been found at the bottom of the Carribean sea. He said the ship has an engraving of dolphin – a telltale sign they belong to the Spanish galleon San Jose. The ship was lost around 300 years ago.

Jeff Kaeli a research engineer with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution said he sat there for about ten minutes and smiled. He said “I’m not a marine archaeologist, but…I know what a cannon looks like. So in that moment, I guess I was the only person in the world who knew we’d found the shipwreck,” he said. He felt that we can take bigger risks using robots by asking it to explore terrains that humans cannot reach.
The robot Remus 6000 is operated by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts, found the ship almost 2000 feet below the surface. It scanned the sea floor using long range sonar then took pictures of anything that didn’t seem ordinary.
It was in 1701 that British warships sunk San Jose and it’s crew of 600. Artifacts like teacups and ceramic jugs are almost found along with the treasure. “Everyone is focused on the treasure aspect….The whole thing is a cultural treasure. It’s a piece of history that’s sitting on the sea floor that tells a story,” Kaeli said.
