UN Chief Accuses Israel of Gaza Law Violations at Security Council, Sparking Israeli Anger

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accused of international law violations in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire as Israel continues to respond to Hamas attacks, creating a deep divide in the Security Council. Guterres expressed concern about the clear breaches of international humanitarian law in Gaza, emphasizing that no party involved in an armed conflict is exempt from these laws, without explicitly naming Israel. He also mentioned that the recent Hamas attacks didn’t occur in isolation, citing the Palestinians’ prolonged experience of a “56-year suffocating occupation.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen strongly reacted to Guterres’ remarks during a high-level Security Council session. Cohen pointed at Guterres and raised his voice, recounting graphic details of civilians, including young children, killed in what has been described as the deadliest single attack in Israeli history. The Security Council session highlighted the ongoing tensions and complexities surrounding the conflict in Gaza.
