US President Joe Biden urges to ensure positive use of AI during APEC summit address

On Friday, US President Joe Biden encouraged member economies of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) group to collaborate in ensuring that artificial intelligence (AI) is utilized for positive transformations rather than exploiting workers or restricting potential. Speaking at the final session of the APEC summit in San Francisco, Biden mentioned briefly discussing AI with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the event.

Biden emphasized the significant technological changes anticipated in the next decade and stressed the need to channel these changes for the better. He urged that AI technology should uplift, rather than limit, the potential of people. Biden noted that the United States has facilitated voluntary commitments from AI companies to prioritize the safety and trustworthiness of AI systems.

During his address, the President outlined steps toward responsible AI use, including ensuring the security of AI systems before public release, implementing watermarks on AI-generated content to indicate its origin, and minimizing the risk of bias or discrimination in AI systems.

He also highlighted the executive order he signed the previous month, focusing on setting new AI standards that may mandate developers of powerful AI systems to share safety test results with the government.

Biden, throughout the APEC summit, has emphasized the strength of the US economy and its ties with Pacific nations. While his broader plan for regional cooperation to counter Chinese influence did not see trade advancements, he underscored the importance of strengthening workers’ rights.

At the end of the summit, Biden officially handed over the APEC chairmanship to Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who expressed a commitment to building on APEC’s achievements in the years to come.
