Accused in Thrissur School Shooting Admitted to Mental Health Center

Jagan, the individual who instilled fear at Thrissur’s Vivekodayam Boys’ Higher Secondary School with an air pistol, has been granted bail shortly after interrogation. His disruptive actions on Tuesday morning involved firing three rounds inside the school. The accused, now admitted to a mental healthcare center, was reportedly undergoing mental health treatment for years.

Police revealed Jagan’s history of mental disorders, even during his arrest after the shooting. Authorities are probing the possibility of intoxicating substances, including drugs, and the motive behind the violence. Jagan purchased the air pistol from a Thrissur armoury shop on September 28, a legal acquisition for a 0.177 baby air pistol.

Around 10.15 am on Tuesday, Jagan entered the school, seeking two former teachers. He displayed erratic behavior, brandishing the air pistol in the staff room, causing panic. Teachers contacted the police, who arrived as Jagan moved through classrooms, firing the air pistol. He sought a cap confiscated by the school two years ago. Witnesses described his erratic actions, threatening to set the school ablaze.

Overpowered by police and locals, Jagan was taken to Thrissur Town East Police Station, interrogated, and later granted bail due to mental health concerns. A previous case, filed on May 18 for causing public nuisance, is already in progress. The Department of General Education is conducting a thorough investigation, directed by Minister V Sivankutty, who emphasizes a prompt report submission.
