Gulf country wins bid to host Expo 2030

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia has won the bid to host Expo 2030. Riyadh will host the Expo 2030 world fair. The announcement was made during the 173rd General Assembly of the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE). World Expo is a five-yearly event that attracts millions of visitors and billions of dollars in investment.

South Korea’s Busan and Italy’s Rome were also in the running to host the world fair.  Riyadh won 119 votes, Busan 29 and Rome 17 votes. A total of 182 members of the BIE  voted in the poll.

Expo 2030 will take place in Riyadh from October 1, 2030, to March 31, 2031. The Expo will be  under the theme ‘The era of change: Together for a foresighted tomorrow’. It will be held near King Salman International Airport, which is currently being developed.

The World Expo  was started in 1851. Expos have been platforms for introducing groundbreaking inventions such as the light bulb, the Ferris wheel and the Eiffel Tower itself, which was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle. The next Expo is scheduled to be held in Osaka, Japan, in 2025.
