Heavy rainfall and flooding hit Nellai and Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu

In the aftermath of intense rainfall causing flooding in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, and Kanniyakumari districts on Sunday, the scheduled Monday examinations for colleges affiliated with Anna University were deferred. Additionally, tests for the university’s distance education program in Nagercoil and those for Manonmaniam Sundaranar University have also been postponed. The district administrations of Tirunelveli and Tenkasi declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. According to the Tirunelveli disaster management department, Naalumukku in Manjolai Hills recorded 19cm of rainfall by 8:30 am on Sunday, with the district experiencing an average rainfall of 25cm between 8:30 am and 6:30 pm. Heavily affected areas include Manjolai, Kakkachi, Oothu, Naalumukku, Moolaikaraipatti, Palayamkottai, Nambiyar Dam, Cheranmahadevi, Nanguneri, Papanasam, Ambasamudram, and Radhapuram.

Papanasam and Manimuthar dams in Tirunelveli district reached 90% and 62% of their capacities on Sunday afternoon, prompted by flash floods in the catchment areas. The district administration cautioned residents near the Thamirabarani River to stay clear of the waterbody, announcing an incremental increase in water release to 35,000 cusecs due to heightened inflow. Contact details for the district disaster management control room (1077) and the state control room (1070) were circulated by the district administration.
