Mumbai: Domestic benchmark indices started the first trading session of 2024 in flat note. BSE Sensex opened at 72,139.09, down 101.17 points. NSE Nifty fell 20.10 points to 21,711.30. About 1,815 shares advanced, 595 declined, and 162 were unchanged.
During trading, Sensex was down 71.04 points or 0.10% at 72,169.22, and the Nifty was down 1.30 points or 0.01% at 21,730.10. About 2351 shares advanced, 958 shares declined, and 122 shares unchanged.

Among sectors, PSU Bank and oil & gas indices up 1% each. BSE Midcap and smallcap indices up 0.5% each. Coal India, Adani Ports, Adani Enterprises, Tata Motors and Grasim Industries are among the top gainers, while losers are M&M, Eicher Motors, Bharti Airtel, LTIMindtree and HUL.
