Model, poet, writer and air hostess Gilu Joseph’s breastfeeding cover photo in Grihalakshmi magazine has managed to create a lot of stir on social media. While it was definitely a brave move, the picture is being deeply scrutinized on social media.
The photograph which was supposed to represent it as a mother’s bond with her children, the cover was slammed for being ‘shamefully vile and sexualized context’.
From being slut-shamed to being called out for nudity, the motive of the cover got defeated. For the uninitiated, this cover was part of a magazine’s campaign ‘Breastfeed freely’ as a part of its International Women’s Day celebrations. This campaign was inspired by a 23-year-old mother Amritha, after her photograph, feeding her child went viral on the Internet.
“It is a problem to interpret this sexually. Isn’t it a beautiful thing, friends? Why do you think it is wrong? Which god will be angry if you feed your child” The 27-year-old also clarified that she said yes to the campaign after reading and knowing everything. She added.

“I am extremely proud of my body and only I exercise rights over it. I only do things that I think is right for me, which is why I had no qualms about taking up this project.”
She also added that she didn’t charge any money for the shoot.
“Till yesterday, they were referring to me as a poet and now they are calling me a slut, prostitute.”
And according to latest reports, a case has also been registered by advocate Vinod Matthew against the publisher and the model in the CJM court of Kollam in Kerala. All these charges have been duly filed under Section 3 and 4 of indecent representation of women (Prohibition) act 1986. The hearing of the case will take place on March 16.
