This is how LDF government tackled the issue of Muslim sub divisions in un aided medical-dental college admissions

LDF government in their image building move took a stern stand against the ‘unquestionable’ prerogatives enjoyed by some Muslim religious leaders in unaided medical-dental admissions regarding the reserved seats. The government withdrew the undisputed authority enjoyed by Muslim religious organizations in giving recommendation letters for admissions in the unaided medical-dental colleges run by the minority community’s organizations.

Now, the Muslim religious organizations cannot give letters specifying the Muslim subdivision of the students. With this order, all Muslim students can apply for admissions in the Muslim management institutions, no need to prove the sub-caste or subdivision. This current order by the ruling government ratifies some earlier demands by certain Muslim organizations that there were no sub-castes in Muslim Community so they required only the caste document issued by the Revenue Department.

But the Christian religious authorities can still issue letters for the caste-based recommendation in the reserved seats for their students in their institutions. This has been aided thanks to the Revenue Department’s inability to prove sub-castes in the Christian community.

Earlier Muslim organizations like Mujahid and South Kerala Jamiathul Ulama had conducted seat sales using the authority of caste-based recommendation. The seats in Karuna Medical College in Palakkad were sold exclusively for the Mujahids while the seats in Aseeziya Medical College were sold to those who were lenient towards South Kerala Jamiathul Ulama. The organisations only gave the recommendations asserting the caste of Muslim students after the prepayment of a hefty amount to them.

It was on last year that the order making mandatory the recommendation by Muslim religious organizations or institutions proving the Muslim sub-caste to which the applicant belonged for medical-dental admissions in Muslim management colleges released. The new order nullifies the previous one which allowed Sunni, Mujahid, Jama ath Islami, Kerala Muslim Jama ath to make recommendations for their castes for admissions in Muslim management run medical-dental colleges.
