Yugoslavian performance artist Marina Abramovic made headlines with the video of her painfully silent reunion with her ex-lover. She is called the ‘grandmother of performance art’ not just simply, she has been staging thought provoking interactive installations for more than 40 years. Abramovic staged a performance piece called ‘Rhythm 0’ at Italy.
Rhythm 0 premises are simple, Abramovic will stand still for 6 hours straight while the people who came to see her were urged to do whatever they wanted to do her using 72 objects that she had placed on a table before her.
She has certain instructions for the crowd:-
There are 72 objects on the table that one can use on me as desired.
I am the object.
During this period I take full responsibility.
Duration: 6 hours
There were flowers to loaded gun among the objectives. At first, only photographers approached her, After a while, people began picking stuff. People made her sit down so that they can humiliate her, some changed her position. One even tried to cut her neck with a razor blade. some touched her intimately, another thrust her arms into the air.
Things went so bad hour after hour, in the third-hour people began to cut her clothes off later explored her skin. Minor sexual assaults were carried out in her body later. but she was so committed to her art that she would not have resisted the rape or even murder.
When six hours were over Abramovic started to walk among the people, they couldn’t look her in the face.
Abramovic said ” This work reveals something terrible about humanity. It shows how fast a person can hurt you under favourable circumstances. It shows how easy it is to dehumanize a person who does not fight, who does not defend himself. It shows that if he provides the stage, the majority of normal people can become truly violent
