Kolkata International Film Festival Honors Mrinal Sen on His Birth Centenary

The 29th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) is hosting an exhibition titled ‘Mrinal Sen: The Maverick’ in honor of the renowned filmmaker’s birth centenary year. The display showcases significant items such as Mrinal Sen’s landline telephone, his favorite chair, the fountain pen he used for scripting, and various film posters. Divided into sections like ‘Mirroring the Middle Class’ and ‘Rebel Roots,’ the exhibition covers Sen’s filmography from his 1955 work ‘Raat bhore’ (The Dawn) to his final film ‘Amar Bhuban’ (This My Land).

Inaugurated by actor-director Anjan Dutt, actress Mamata Shankar, and superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, the exhibition features shooting stills and information from Sen’s iconic films, including ‘Ek Din Pratidin,’ ‘Akaler Shandhaney,’ ‘Chalchitra,’ ‘Kharij,’ and ‘Khandahar.’ It also presents posters from various films, including the 1984 London Film Festival poster of ‘Khandahar’ and ‘Antareen’ (The Confined).

Sourced from individuals close to Mrinal Sen, including his son Kunal Sen, actor Ranjit Mallick, and Anjan Dutt, the exhibition aims to explore different phases of Sen’s illustrious career. The materials include references from books like ‘Mrinal Sen: Sixty Years in Search of Cinema’ and ‘Bondhu: My Father My Friend.’

Mrinal Sen, a maverick filmmaker, passed away on December 30, 2018, at his residence in south Kolkata. The exhibition also features photographs from his last journey.
