Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed near Asangaon

Six bogies of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed near Asangaon, on the outskirts of Thane early today. No casualty has been reported so far which came as a relief to the railway authorities. Officials from Central Railway are arranging buses for the stranded passengers while doctors and senior officers are already at site of the accident.

The train went off the tracks between Asand Gaon and Wasind at 6.40am. Rescue and relief teams have arrived at the spot. Visuals showed passengers making their way out of the coaches themselves. Electric supply was shut off to prevent any loss of lives.

Officials said the suburban local train services of the Central Railway in Mumbai and Thane were affected due to the derailment, hitting morning peak hours and commuter traffic.

Local train services between Mumbai CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Kalyan remain unaffected, said the railway official.

The exact cause of the the derailment is not yet clear. However, it is suspected that a portion of the tracks were breached due to heavy rains in the Kasara Ghats section in the last three days.

This is the third major incident of derailment in the past two weeks in the country and the second affecting the Mumbai suburban sector in three days.

The latest derailment comes just six days after 74 people were injured when the Delhi-bound Kaifiyat Express derailed near Auriya in Uttar Pradesh. While no deaths were reported, the stranded passengers were sent to New Delhi.

The train travelling from Azamgarh to Delhi collided with the dumper at around 2:50 am between Pata and Achhalda railway stations, a spokesperson for the North Central Railway (NCR) said.

Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said that 74 people were injured of which four received serious injuries and had been rushed to Saifai and Etawah hospitals.
