November/December polls: All eyes on these two seats

Gujarat has two vacant seats that are being under close watch by party leaders before the Assembly elections. One is the constituency of Anandiben Patel, the former Gujarat Chief Minister who has said she does not want to contest. Patel had won from the Ghatlodiya seat in 2012. BJP has Anandiben’s daughter in mind for the seat that her mother vacated. The party’s local unit has decided to leave it to their state and central leadership.

The other seat is Naranpura, vacated by Amit Shah. The BJP president had said that no one from his family would contest the Assembly elections when the party nominated him to the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP’s state election committee is expected to meet on November 10-11 to decide the candidates from among the probables suggested by respective district units. The replacements of Shah and Patel shall be known soon.

With the beginning of November, the political parties are preparing for the Parliament winter session. Although a confusion remains as to the formal announcement of the Parliament session. The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs has not yet met to finalize the dates of the winter session. Its chairman Ranjith Singh is likely to be out of the capital on Monday and Tuesday in Himachal Pradesh to campaign for the BJP. Opposition parties hope the government will finalize a date anytime after Rajnath is free from the Himachal campaign.
