1 dead, 5 injured as Pakistan targets Indian posts in J-K’s Poonch

Pakistani troops on today morning pounded Indian posts along the line of control (LOC) in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir, breaking a two-week lull along the de facto border.

“The Pakistani side fired indiscriminately with small weapons at Indian positions in Rajouri’s Nowshera sector and Krishna Ghati in Poonch. The Indian Army retaliated and the firing, which commenced around 7.20 am, was on,”  Defence Spokesman Lt Col Manish Mehta said.

Krishna Ghati is the area from where a rogue border action team of Pakistan crossed the LoC, ambushed a patrol and beheaded two Indian soldiers, Paramjit Singh and Prem Sagar, on May 1.

The killings triggered heavy exchanges between the two sides in the twin border districts for a fortnight.

Three civilians, including a young girl, were killed in Pakistan shelling in Jhangar area of Nowshera while 10 people, including four soldiers were injured.

Around 3000 villagers from Nowshera have moved to five relief camps to escape Pakistan shelling.

Ceasefire violations along the LoC go up in the summer as snow melts and mountain passes open through which militants sneak into India. Pakistani troops give cover fire to infiltrators.
