Gold display at Kerala MLA’s daughter’s marriage leaves party red-faced !

Marriages are said to be made in heaven. In India, gold serves as additional reinforcement. The Keralite’s obsession with the yellow metal has even earned it the reputation of being the land of extravagant weddings.

A few days after Former Kerala Minister Mullakkara Ratnakaran raised the issue of lavish weddings in the state, a member of his party CPI has now courted controversy for spending lakhs on her daughter’s marriage. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had also recalled his experience of attending a grand wedding handled by event management companies.

The MLA’s daughter’s show of gold hasn’t exactly dazzled the party bigwigs. MLA Geetha Gopi, representing Nattika constituency in Thrissur, has been criticised by party members for not following the policy of simplicity preached by the party.

The wedding of her daughter took place at Poonthanam Auditorium in Guruvayoor, and the photos of the bride, decked in gold, have gone viral on social media since then. Former State Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and many other politicians had attended the grand wedding ceremony. However, the party has sought an explanation from the MLA.

Regarding the matter Geetha Gopi said ,“Party has asked for an explanation regarding it, and I will be meeting them at 2 pm today. I will talk about it after the meeting.”

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Kerala government has introduced a green protocol for weddings to make it eco-friendly by restricting the usage of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials.
