Respecting womanhood; Private firm introduces the ‘First Day Off on Periods’

Women do get mood swings, cramps weird pains and what not at that time of the month. It is reality and it seems India Inc has soon started accepting it as it is. A Mumbai firm Culture Machine has introduced ‘The First Day of Period’ leave for its women staff. The organisation has 75 women employees, who have given a thumbs up to the Human Resources department for the new policy.

The organisation has released a video of its women staff talk about how they feel on the first day of their period and their reactions to the first day of period leave policy.

The company has also floated a petition addressed to the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Ministry of Women and Child Development, to apply the period leave policy across India.

Last year, the Centre was mulling a period leave policy for working women across the country. However, no such policy has taken shape so far.

The Bihar government has such a policy in place for its women employees. Women working in several departments of the Bihar government get two-day leave every month for ‘biological reasons’.

With the floating of a petition, it remains to be seen whether the Centre brings such a policy in place too. Meanwhile, the video released by Culture Machine has got thumbs up from viewers on YouTube.

People around the nation had appreciated the organisation’s move and appealed to other organisations to follow suit.
