A senior officer has served a legal notice to the government through defence secretary Sanjay Mitra, seeking a reversal of free rations to military officers within 60 days.
In his notice served under Section 80 of the Civil Procedure Code, Colonel Mukul Dev said that he joined the Indian Army in 1988 after going through a UPSC advertisement/notification in a leading newspaper regarding the Combined Defence Services Examination.
He also contended that at the time of commissioning, there was no mention of cash in lieu of free rations. It was only then that the officer had applied for a commission in the Army.
But now that it has been decided upon by the government beginning from July 1st that the officers of the Indian Armed Forces serving in Peace Area will not receive free ration. Instead, they shall be paid Rs.96.03 as ration money every month. He further stated that the decision has violated the basic terms and conditions of his service. The officer also threatened to move court if the order is not reversed.
