PM Modi greets Chinese President Xi Jinping on birthday

Despite the border conflicts that India and China are involved in, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang on their respective birthdays through his page on Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

On June 15, Modi had greeted his Chinese counterpart on his birthday and said, “I met him in Astana SCO summit a few days ago, and we had an effective talk on how to develop Sino-India relationship.”

The prime minister has written on Weibo six times since the border standoff between the two neighbouring countries began in June.

China and India can indulge in a bilateral meeting between National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval and Chinese state councillor Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) NSAs in Beijing.

Although the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang did not confirm whether the two would meet, at earlier meetings of BRICS NSAs, the tradition has been maintained that officials hold bilateral talks. The meeting is scheduled for July 27-28.
